Vol. 99 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding on Kerry Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the flooding of large areas of land in the townland of Gurrane, on the Ventry Estate, County Kerry, due to breaches in the embankments of the River Maine; that the cost of the repairs required cannot be met out of the maintenance fund administered by the local trustees; and if his Department will make a free grant for the repair of these embankments.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to his question of the 19th October, 1944, in this matter. The offer of the Land Commission to execute the repairs necessary to the embankments on the Ventry Estate on condition that the affected tenants cooperated by providing a certain amount of free labour, carting and materials was not availed of except by the tenants of one townland where the repairs required have been executed. Owing to the refusal of the tenants of the other townlands to co-operate, the necessary repairs were not undertaken.
