Vol. 99 No. 16

Holidays (Employees) (Amendment) Bill, 1946—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend in certain respects and to extend the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1939.—(William Norton, Michael J. Keyes, James Larkin (Junior).)

I presume that the Second Stage will be taken on Friday, after No. 9?

When No. 9 is completed, and assuming that the Bill is circulated in time.

Of course if the Bill is not circulated in time it cannot be taken on Friday.

Private Deputies' Business will be taken at 9 o'clock to-night, and is likely to go on for an hour-and-a-half on Friday also. In view of that, perhaps we could postpone it until Friday week?

It is only provisional. Would the Deputy desire to take it on Wednesday next?

Well, I do not think we can reach it on Friday.

Very well, Wednesday next. Of course, it might be proposed to take another motion in the meantime, and Deputies might like to have this in their hands beforehand.

Well, then, we can set it down provisionally for Wednesday.

Is it the rule to give precedence to Private Deputies' motions over a Bill?

The rule is that a Bill takes precedence over all private motions, except one which is actually being discussed.

Therefore, it is being taken in Private Deputies' time.

It could be taken after No. 9 on, say, Wednesday next.
