Vol. 100 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Return of Arrests and Summonses.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is correct that the Gárda Síochána have been required to prepare a return showing the number of arrests and summonses in respect of the arrests effected and the summonses issued by each individual Gárda and if he will indicate the purpose of such return.

No general instructions on this subject have been issued by the Commissioner, but directions have been given in the Dublin Metropolitan Area for the preparation of such a return. The return was called for so that the relative efficiency of individual members could be gauged with a view to the selection and allocation of members for the various duties, such as criminal investigation, detection and prevention of street nuisances, cycle patrols, etc.

I take it that this return is not called for solely for the purpose of relating the efficiency of individual members of the Gárda to the number of summonses issued and the arrests effected.

Mr. Boland

I understand that is not the object.
