Vol. 100 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig-Breeding.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that at a recent meeting of the Pig Dealers' Association great concern was expressed at the reduction of the pig population of this country; whether, in view of this, he will take steps to see that the Pigs and Bacon Commission will expedite the distribution of sows to small farmers throughout the country, particularly in the pig-raising districts; if he is aware, in this connection, that the Pigs and Bacon Commission have notified producers that no further applications for sows will be received; and if he is prepared to state when further applications will be accepted by the commission.

I am aware that from 1940 to 1944 there was a progressive decline in the number of pigs in this country. Since the latter year there has been an increase in pig production and the indications are that the position in this respect will continue to improve. The scheme initiated by the Pigs and Bacon Commission towards the end of 1944 for the improvement of the breed of pigs throughout the country by the distribution of a number of pure-bred sows has had to be suspended for the time being owing to difficulty in procuring animals of suitable type. The scheme will be resumed as soon as improved supplies of pure-bred sows become available.
