Vol. 100 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fenit Island: Tidal Waters Danger.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that an area of about 300 acres of first-class land in Fenit Island, County Kerry, on which stand the homes of eight families, is in danger of being submerged by tidal waters; and if he will have the matter examined, with a view to erecting an embankment to prevent this great loss.

Mr. Boland

The Land Commission have recently had an inspection made of the holdings at Fenit Island on the estate of J.C.D. Hurly, Record No. S. 2685, to which it is presumed the question refers. They are satisfied that any flooding which might occur thereon would be of a temporary nature only and that the area affected would not be extensive. In the circumstances, the Land Commission are of opinion that the expenditure involved in the construction of additional protective works on the Island would not at present be justified.
