Vol. 100 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parking of Motor Cars.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he has received a copy of a resolution from the Skibbereen Urban District Council requesting him to amend the regulations prohibiting the parking of cars within 30 feet of a street junction in cities and towns as the enforcement of this regulation operates unfairly against shopkeepers whose business premises are within 30 feet of such junctions; further, if he is aware that the regulation is a source of inconvenience to farmers and others having business dealings with such shopkeepers; and whether, in the circumstances, he is prepared to amend the regulations to permit parking at a distance of not less than ten feet from street junctions.

I have received a copy of the resolution of the Skibbereen Urban District Council mentioned by the Deputy. I assume that the resolution refers to a provision contained in Article 7 of the General By-laws for the Control of Traffic, 1937, which were made by the Commissioner of the Gárda Síochána with the consent of the Minister for Local Government and Public Health under Section 147 of the Road Traffic Act, 1933.

I have asked the Commissioner to give consideration to the representations of the Skibbereen Urban District Council.

Tell the sergeant in Skibbereen to have sense.

Is the Minister aware that the Skibbereen Urban Council recommended a speed limit of 15 miles for motorists passing through any town? In view of that, will the Minister make a further recommendation to the Commissioner that the regulation about the 30 feet is not necessary?

That does not arise.

It does, I beg your pardon.
