Vol. 100 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donnybrook Gárda Station.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the filling of a vacancy for the position of boilerman at the Gárda station at Donnybrook, Dublin, has been under consideration lately; and if so, if he will indicate the wages to be paid, the hours of duty and the duties to be performed; further, if he will state if the position has, in fact, been filled, and, if so, the conditions of employment and rates of wages on the basis of which the occupant has been employed.

There has been a vacancy in this position since the 14th November last. The wages fixed for the position are as follows:—During the winter season:— Employee over 21 and married or widower: 30/- per week plus emergency bonus of 15/- per week; employee single and over 21 years: 30/- per week plus emergency bonus of 13/- per week.

During the summer season:— Employee over 21 and married or widower: 7/- per week plus cost-of-living bonus of 7/8 plus emergency bonus of 8/3; employee single and over 21 years: 7/- per week plus cost-of-living bonus of 7/8 plus emergency bonus of 6/3.

The hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in summer, but the work is intermittent. The duties to be performed in the winter season are the cleaning of the station yard, three lavatories, wash-house, etc., and attending to the boiler for central heating. In summer the boiler has not to be attended to.

The occupant of the post receives one week's holiday each year.

Am I to take it that it is not correct that an ex-member of the L.S.F. was offered the position in question at a wage of 35/- per week, with hours of duty ranging from 7 a.m. to 12 midnight, with certain intervals off?

Mr. Boland

I never heard that. My information is that the hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., intermittent employment.
