Vol. 100 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Salaries.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state how the figure of £811, mentioned in the table of salaries published by his Department on March 29th, 1946, was arrived at; and the number of teachers who, under the recent offer, would become entitled to be paid at that rate as from September 1st, 1946.

It was stated in the notice published by my Department on the 28th March, 1946, that, under the scales of salary and other grants which were offered to the teachers, the remuneration of a principal teacher at the maximum of the scale, who is a married man, is rated highly efficient and possesses the Higher Diploma in Education and whose school is situated in Dublin City and is placed in the category of 450 pupils or over, would be £811. This amount is arrived at as follows:— maximum scale salary for a highly efficient married man teacher—£525, principal's allowance—£216, rent allowance—£40, special bonus for Higher Diploma in Education—£30.

The number of teachers who, on their existing qualifications, would have been entitled to receive remuneration totalling £811 per annum as from the 1st September, 1946, is three.

In five other cases the necessary conditions would be fulfilled except that the principal teacher would not possess the Higher Diploma in Education. These teachers would receive remuneration totalling £781 or £801, according to their qualifications.
