Vol. 100 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vivisection Centres.

asked the Minister for Justice if he can state the number of places in Éire which are registered for vivisection; and from what sources the animals used in such places are obtained.

Twenty-two places are registered under Section 7 of the Cruelty to Animals Act, 1876, for the performance of experiments on animals.

The persons licensed to perform experiments make their own arrangements for obtaining animals and I am not in a position to state the source from which they are obtained. I understand, however, that rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice, which are the animals used in the vast majority of experiments, are bred at the registered places.
