Vol. 100 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerosene Supply for Cooking.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that along the extensive seaboard of south-west Cork there is no wood fuel available, and the turf available, which has to be brought from distant bog areas, is of poor quality and difficult to purchase; and whether, having regard to these circumstances, he will endeavour to make an allocation of kerosene available for cooking purposes to farmers, cottiers and others who posses cooking stoves, in this isolated area stretching from the Old Head of Kinsale to Dursey Head.

I am aware that the fuel requirements of the area mentioned by the Deputy cannot be met in full from local sources. Supply difficulties arise in the South West Cork area from time to time but I have received no representations recently in regard to either the quality or quantity of turf available there. Any merchants who are unable to secure their requirements should advise my Department of their difficulties and steps will be taken at once in the matter. Kerosene supplies are so limited that it is not possible to grant special allowances for cooking purposes.
