Vol. 101 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Citizens in English Prisons.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will make representations to the British Government, on behalf of Irish citizens who are at present detained in English prisons for alleged political offences, with a view to securing their immediate release, having regard to the fact that the emergency in both countries is now ended.

The answer is in the negative. The Deputy should know that there is no basis on which, without complete stultification, I could make the representations suggested.

Considering all prisoners have left the Curragh, is it possible that these Irishmen who were imprisoned for political offences are to be detained for ever in Great Britain?

It is quite evident that the Taoiseach would not be in a position to make representations as his own doorstep is not clean.

That is not a question.

It is the truth.

What is the truth? The truth is that there has been an effort to put this Government in a false position. The truth is that there is a group in this country who pretend that they are a Government and who claim the right to murder our citizens and servants of the State and then expect that they can escape any punishment. That is the truth.

Have you a right to murder them?

Who sentenced McCurtain to death?

If anybody wants to put down a motion to discuss this matter, he can do that if he has the courage to do it.

We might be put in Mountjoy.
