Vol. 103 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restrictions on Sterling Allowances.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what restrictions, if any, are imposed by Emergency Powers Order, on (a) arrivals in Éire by air, (b) arrivals in Éire otherwise, in respect of the amount of sterling each such arrival may bring into Éire; and if any restriction whatsoever is imposed by such Order on any such arrival as to the amount of sterling which, after arrival, he may acquire and secure for spending in Éire by cheques drawn by him on banks outside Éire.

As regards the importation of sterling bank notes, I refer the Deputy to Emergency Powers (Finance) (No. 6) Order, 1940, as amended by Emergency Powers (Finance) (No. 10) Order, 1945.

These Orders prohibit, except with permission granted by the Minister for Finance or by persons authorised by him or on his behalf, the importation of certain classes of currency notes, among which are bank notes of any bank of issue in Great Britain or Northern Ireland, from any place not in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or the Isle of Man. They provide, however, that the prohibition shall not apply to such sterling bank notes in the possession of the traveller (other than a person employed on a vessel; vehicle or aircraft), when their value does not in the aggregate exceed £10.

No restriction has been imposed by Emergency Powers Order on the amount of sterling which, after arrival, a visitor may acquire by cheque drawn by him on banks outside this country.
