Vol. 103 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Detention of County Westmeath Men.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that a number of men, including Messrs. John Campbell, Dan Muldoon and Richard Hickey, all of Mountemple, were arrested and detained in August, 1943, at Mountemple, Moate, County Westmeath; if he is further aware that money and clothes, the property of these men, was held by the authorities; and if he will make immediate inquiries into the matter with a view to having their belongings returned to them.

I have had inquiries made in this matter and I am informed that the Gárda did not retain any money or property belonging to the men in question, but that, in accordance with the usual practice, two of the men were required to pay for meals which were ordered for them from outside the Gárda station.

I think that, in the circumstances of the case, the men should not have been asked to pay for the meals and I have directed that the amounts paid should be refunded.

You are getting very generous.
