Vol. 104 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oil-Burning Locomotives.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the curtailment of the railway transport facilities, arising from the shortage of fuel, he will state what progress has been made by Córas Iompair Éireann towards the conversion of locomotives from steam to oil-burning; and when such conversion will be sufficiently completed to enable a resumption of normal railway transport services.

The work of converting the Córas Iompair Éireann locomotives from coal to oil-burning has been held up by the strike of fitters and turners. Only three engines have been adapted so far. Additional engines could be converted at the rate of about three each week if the necessary labour was available. The company have approximately 500 locomotives, and I am advised that their plans for further conversions will depend on the satisfactory operation of the first 30 to be converted.

Are the three converted engines running?

I understand so. I could not say definitely without making inquiries.
