Vol. 104 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crews of Shipwrecked Vessels.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether it is a fact that the activities formerly engaged in by the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society in this country have now been taken over by the Irish Red Cross Society; and if so, whether he is in a position to state if the latter body provides clothing and equipment for crews of shipwrecked vessels, after their rescue, to replace that which was lost or damaged in the wreck.

I am not aware that the activities formerly engaged in by the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society in this country have now been taken over by the Irish Red Cross Society. My information is that co-operation between the two organisations has been arranged and that, where necessary, i.e., where the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society has not an agency, the Red Cross Society provides immediate aid in the way of food and clothing to seamen landing on our shores from shipwrecked vessels.
