Vol. 104 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Convicted Aliens.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of aliens, with the name, address and occupation of each one concerned, convicted of criminal offences in the courts since 1938; whether they have all been deported; and if not, the reasons why they were not deported following such offences.

Mr. Boland

During the period mentioned in the question, five aliens who had been convicted of offences were deported. Statistics as regards the number of aliens who were convicted of offences but were not deported are not available. It is not the practice to deport an alien automatically if he is convicted of any offence. Consideration is given to all the circumstances. For example, an alien who had been resident here for a long time, whose record generally was good, would not be deported solely because he had been convicted of a minor offence.
