Vol. 105 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers - West Cork Transport Inconveniences.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the great loss and inconvenience caused to farmers, business people and others living in the Barryroe, Timoleague, Courtmacsherry and Clonakilty districts by the closing down of the branch lines serving these districts; that Córas Iompair Éireann have refused to provide an alternative bus service to Timoleague and Courtmacsherry; and if he will, in order to convenience the residents of these districts, and in view of the importance of Courtmacsherry as a tourist resort, direct Córas Iompair Éireann to provide a bus service for Timoleague and Courtmacsherry.

I am advised that Córas Iompair Éireann are aware of the hardship caused by the lack of passenger transport services in these areas and that they intend to provide a bus service as soon as a vehicle can be made available.

Will the Minister give any indication as to when the bus service will be provided?

I could not.

In view of the importance of Courtmacsherry as a tourist resort and in view of the importance of the area as a farming district, it is very unsatisfactory to have to depend on transport by lorry.

I could not name a date.
