Vol. 105 No. 10

Written Answers. - Fish Prices.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state, for each of the years 1945 and 1946: (a) the wholesale price of (i) herring, and (ii) mackerel sold on the home market; and (b) the price realised on the export market, for (i) herring, and (ii) mackerel.

The maximum wholesale price prescribed under the Emergency Powers (Fish) (Maximum Prices) Order, 1944, for herring and mackerel sold on the home market has been 7/- per stone since December, 1944. I am aware, however, that that figure is not always obtainable when these fish are in good supply.

The prices realised on the export market for herrings and mackerel vary almost from day to day. The global figures of quantity and value of such exports according to the official trade statistics are as follows:—

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) the average price paid to fishermen for whiting, cod, haddock and plaice, in each of the years 1944, 1945 and 1946; (b) the wholesale price of each of these varieties; and (c) the retail selling price of each such variety of fish.

The average price per cwt. realised by the fishermen for their landings of the under-mentioned varieties in the year 1946 was:—

The corresponding figures for 1944 and 1945 will be found in the annual report on the sea and inland fisheries for each of these years.

Particulars as to the maximum prices specified for sale by wholesale and retail of each of the above-mentioned varieties are given in the Emergency Powers (Fish) (Maximum Prices) Order, 1944.

I am, however, aware that these prices are sometimes not realised when the supply of a particular variety happens to be comparatively heavy.
