Vol. 108 No. 1

Written Answers. - Roscommon Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will give the following particulars in respect of each estate, large or small, in the hands of the Land Commission and still undivided in County Roscommon: (a) the name of the former registered owner and/or landlord; (b) the area; (c) the townland in which it is situated; (d) the price which the Land Commission agreed to pay; (e) whether the price was paid in cash or, if not, how it was paid; (f) how it is worked or used at present; and (g) the total number of such estates in the county.

There are approximately 11,800 acres of land in hands of the Land Commission in County Roscommon. This area is the undivided portion of about 70 estates which originally comprised about 29,500 acres, of which the purchase price was about £165,500. About ? of the area on hands is bog or waste and turbary lettings are made wherever possible. The agricultural land is used for grazing, tillage and meadows, and is mostly let for these purposes. The actual area is subject to frequent fluctuations. There are difficulties and objections in the way of supplying information as to the location and area of each parcel on hands, but if the Deputy is concerned as regards any particular estate and will communicate with me I will see what can be done.
