Vol. 108 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hackney Drivers' Rates.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is intended to make any adjustment in the rates chargeable by hackney drivers, in view of the increase in road tax and insurance premiums.

The fares for hackney cars are not controlled.

Surely the Minister is wrong. Fares for hackney cars in the city are controlled. I am told that I am to pay what is on the clock plus 50 per cent.

The Deputy's question obviously refers to taxis.

It refers to hackney carriages. I understood that taxis offering for hire were also hackneys. Are they not?

Technically not? Does the Minister intend to make any change or is it the Minister's responsibility to control the rates charged for taxis in the street?

By taxis?

I think the Deputy had better give notice of that question.

The Minister wants me to put down another question about taxis?

I want the Deputy to ask the question he wants answered.

I thought we were trying to save paper.
