Vol. 109 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention has been called to the unusually high prices charged in Dublin for potatoes; whether it is apprehended that there will be a shortage, in 1948, of potatoes suitable for human use; and whether he will state what steps are being or will be taken to ensure that an ample supply of potatoes will be maintained and that any attempt to divert supplies to the black-market will be frustrated.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to a question about potato supplies given by me in Dáil Éireann on the 20th November last.

I am aware that the prices which are being charged in Dublin for potatoes are higher than the prices which obtained at the corresponding period last year. The position regarding supplies and prices is being kept under constant review and steps will be taken to control prices if circumstances justify that course.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, he will recall that on previous occasions it was necessary to take steps towards the end of the year in order to safeguard supplies for the following spring. In view of the fact that in the main sources of supply for the Dublin market there is a reduced crop, would it not be necessary to take steps earlier?

The question has been considered to take action as in previous years against a possible scarcity in the spring. There has been a reduced yield of potatoes this year but the proportion sold is very small and there need not be anxiety, I think, concerning supplies for human consumption, subject to the price being maintained at a level sufficient to attract the producers.
