Vol. 111 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crushed Limestone Supplies (West Limerick).

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether any limestone quarries in West Limerick have been examined with a view to producing crushed limestone; and, if so, with what results.

The limestones in the West Limerick area were surveyed and classified by the Geological Survey in 1860, but the stones were not examined as to their suitability or otherwise for producing crushed limestone. No survey or examination of limestone quarries in West Limerick has since been made by the Geological Survey. A preliminary survey of the area was carried out in 1947 by Mianraí Teoranta. The results, while not conclusive, do not suggest that conditions are very favourable for the production of crushed limestone.
