Vol. 112 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Tram Routes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware (a) that uneasiness has been caused amongst Córas Iompair Eireann tram conductors and drivers employed on the Nos. 14 and 15 tram routes by rumours that the trams on these routes will be replaced by buses in the immediate future; (b) that a change-over to buses without proper garaging facilities in the locality will gravely inconvenience the employees concerned, as they would then be attached to garages at very considerable distances from their homes; and, if so, whether he will direct Córas Iompair Éireann not to change over to buses on these routes without giving adequate notice to such employees, or, alternatively, ensuring that no change is made without proper garaging facilities being made available in the locality.

I have been informed by Córas Iompair Éireann that it is their intention to replace the trams on these routes as soon as the necessary buses are available. Any question of inconvenience for the staff resulting from this change would be appropriate for discussion between the representatives of the trade unions and the company. I have no function in the matter.
