Vol. 113 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Tomato Houses.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of tomato houses erected in County Donegal under the Special Congested Districts Scheme; the number of houses utilised during the past season and the estimated quantity of tomatoes marketed; and further, whether the operation of the scheme has been reasonably successful having regard to its experimental character and what his intentions are with regard to the promotion of the scheme for the coming financial year.

Eighty glass-houses have been in production under the Gaeltacht Glass-house Scheme in the Gortahork district of County Donegal during the 1948 season. Twenty more glass-houses in the district are approaching completion. Disposal of the crop is still proceeding and the final results of the season's working will not be available for some time.

As regards the latter part of the Deputy's question, I can assure him that everything possible will be done to make the scheme a success.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is in a position to state whether expenditure on the Connemara glass-house scheme was justified by results; and if he can supply statistics concerning the undertaking.

I am not yet in a position to give the information requested by the Deputy. Disposal of the present season's crop is still proceeding and the final results will not be available for some time.
