Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oats Purchase Scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if the oats purchase scheme is confined to white oats bushelling over 38 lbs.; and if he will extend it to include oats of lower bushel content and of all varieties.

The scheme generally applies only to oats of the class referred to in the first part of the Deputy's question. I do not think that it is desirable to depart from the standards already laid down in the scheme.

Is the Minister aware that there is a large quantity of fairly good dried oats, which are certainly suitable for feeding, bushelled over 36? Does the Minister realise that the farmers who produced those oats, particularly those in the poorer areas of the country, have been looking forward to a break which will be denied to them if the standards fixed are adhered to?

I do not think I have anything to add to the reply I have already given.

Arising out of the Minister's answer, would he take steps to ensure that those who sold their oats at 21/- will now get 28/-?

I have nothing to add to the reply I have already given.
