Vol. 113 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Potatoes.

Mr. Flynn

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the Government of Israel are anxious to purchase 12,000 tons of potatoes from producers in this country; and if, in view of the surplus of potatoes in County Kerry, he will negotiate with that Government with a view to availing of this opportunity of disposing of the surplus at a good price.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. I may mention, however, that inquiries have been received from persons in this country and in Britain as to whether licences would be granted for the export of ware potatoes to Palestine. The inquirers have been informed that export licences will be granted provided the price to be paid is reasonable, and that the finance arrangements proposed are satisfactory. I should mention that in quiries as to the availability of seed potatoes have been received, and that, on quantities being made available, orders have not materialised to date.

Mr. Flynn

Arising out of the Minister's reply, if, as a result of inquiries, the price offered is greater than the price obtained in the British market, will the Minister review the entire situation in order to give the farmers the benefit of such increased prices?

Oh, most assuredly. Any business of that character will be most welcome. And if the Deputy knows of any such business, or thinks that the Department would be of any assistance to him in procuring such business, I would be glad if he would communicate with the Department and be speak our assistance in any way in which he thinks we can help.
