Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Dumps in Phoenix Park.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the turf in the Phoenix Park is rapidly deteriorating; that turf sold to the needy under the voucher scheme in the City of Dublin is drawn from this dump in a wet and decayed state and is causing considerable annoyance to the recipients; and, if so, whether he will make a statement on the turf position.

I am not aware that the turf in the Phoenix Park is rapidly deteriorating. I am advised that it is of reasonably good quality although there is bound to be a certain proportion of an inferior type.

There is a quantity of machine-won turf in the Phoenix Park which normally would not be sufficient to meet the full needs of the cheap fuel scheme in Dublin over the whole winter, but arrangements are now being made for the release of this turf for the recipients under that scheme.
