Vol. 113 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Supply in South Kerry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what steps are being taken to commence the rural electrification scheme in the South Kerry area and whether any initial work is being done for such purpose in the Kilgarvan, Kenmare, Sneem, Caherdaniel and Waterville districts, County Kerry.

In their original report on rural electrification prepared by the Electricity Supply Board, which was published as a White Paper in 1944, it was stated that "from a practical point of view the rural areas more remote from the existing system must await the prior extension of supply to rural areas situated between them and the existing 10,000 volt system." Most of the South Kerry areas mentioned are remote from the board's existing 10 kv system, and, therefore, it is anticipated that it will be some time before supply will be made available generally in these areas, but the acquisition of the Kenmare undertaking to which I refer in a separate reply to the Deputy would advance the time of supply in the adjacent rural districts such as Kenmare itself.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the Electricity Supply Board is likely to take over the electric lighting scheme for Kenmare.

The acquisition of Kenmare undertaking is contemplated by the board and negotiations are proceeding. As soon as agreement has been reached, arrangements will at once be made to effect the change over without avoidable delay.
