Vol. 113 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Bus Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays of each week passengers travelling from Dublin by the morning train or bus to Waterford arrive just after the bus for Dungarvan and the western districts has left and as a result have to wait in Waterford for the evening bus; and, if so, whether he will make representations to Córas Iompair Éireann for the 1.20 bus not to leave until the train arrives or alternatively for the 9.30 a.m. train from Dublin to leave at 9.0 a.m. so as to connect with the 1.20 bus to Dungarvan.

I have made inquiries in this matter from Córas Iompair Éireann. They inform me that an alteration in the departure time of the train from Dublin would cause considerable dislocation of existing connections, and that a similar result would follow from a change in the departure time of the 1.20 p.m. bus ex Waterford which connects with various services leaving Cork at 5.30 p.m. The company do not consider it desirable to alter the time-tables at present, as it is felt that such action would cause greater inconvenience to travellers. The representations will be kept in mind in considering any future changes in the time-tables.

I happen to know this particular area pretty well. I can assure the Minister that the bus sometimes leaves ten minutes late and yet succeeds in reaching its destination on time. I cannot understand why the official starting time could not be put back ten minutes. I suggest to the Minister that he should make further inquiries in the matter.
