Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Pay.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the hardship being borne by members of the Garda Síochána through their inability to meet the rising cost of living on the inadequate pay they receive; whether, in view of the fact that it is over two years since they received any increase in pay, he has made any recommendations that will ease their burdens, and if so whether he will outline these proposals and state when they will take effect.

It has been decided to grant increases in Garda remuneration, and an announcement on the subject will soon be made.

Mr. A. Byrne

Would the Minister state from what date he intends to grant the increase? Is he aware that the award of 11/- was made last February, over 12 months ago, and that certain other employees of the Government got the increase from the 29th May? What is the cause of the delay in giving the Gardaí the same increase?

I can only say that an announcement will be made shortly.

Mr. A. Byrne

Having regard to the fact that certain other employees got the increase on the 29th May, it is not much to expect that the Gardaí, who are doing very valuable duty, would be treated at least equally as well as those who got the increases in May last.

All the factors are being taken into consideration.

Mr. A. Byrne

I beg to give notice that I will raise this matter on the adjournment, Sir, with your permission.
