Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when it is proposed to begin the rural electrification of the Kilmacthomas area, Waterford; and if the Electricity Supply Board has made any move to take over the electric lighting scheme of Kilmacthomas village.

The question of supply to the Kilmacthomas area under the rural electrification scheme has been considered by the Electricity Supply Board, but owing to the distance from the nearest supply point the extension could not be economically undertaken having regard to the very limited number of potential consumers. The acquisition of the existing undertaking in Kilmacthomas village cannot be considered pending the economic development of the area.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what preliminary steps have been taken for the purpose of extending the Electricity Supply Board service to Spiddal, County Galway; and, in particular, whether a local committee has been formed to organise the potential consumers resident in the area.

The Spiddal area has been selected for supply under the rural electrification scheme and it is hoped to start work in the area within the next few months. I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that they are not aware of the existence of a local committee in the area for organising the potential consumers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will say when the Electricity Supply Board is expected to extend its service to Oughterard, County Galway.

At present the nearest point of the national network is 16 miles distant from Oughterard. An extension of this magnitude at present costs would not be economic and it is not possible to say, in present circumstances, when it may be practicable to extend supply to Oughterard on an economic basis.
