Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Statistics.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the total number of dwelling-houses completed by local authorities in the years 1938, 1947 and 1948 respectively.

Mr. Murphy

The figures are:— 1938, 6,600; 1947, 744; 1948, 1,371.

Is it possible for the Minister to give figures as to the number of houses under construction during the same years?

Mr. Murphy

Yes. 1938, dwellings completed in urban areas, 3,727; dwellings completed in non-municipal towns and rural areas, 2,873; 1947, in urban areas, 723; in rural areas, 21; 1948, in urban areas, 1,223, in rural areas, 148. The number of houses in the course of construction by local authorities at the close of the years in question were: 1938, 6,603; 1947, 3,085; 1948, 6,869.

Could the Minister inform us how many of the houses completed in 1948 were commenced in 1948?

A Deputy

Fianna Fáil sat down on that job.

Your Party is sitting down on the job so far as housing is concerned.

There is not a house under construction in County Dublin that was not started under the Fianna Fáil Government.

As soon as all these compliments are exchanged we will get on with the business.

asked the Minister for Local Government to state the number of dwellings actually completed and ready for occupancy built by the Dublin Corporation in the years 1938, 1947 and 1948.

Mr. Murphy

The figures are:—

1938

1,666

1947

645

1948

500

Now are we sitting down on the job?

How many houses are under construction for the Dublin Corporation?

Mr. Murphy

The number of houses in the course of construction on 31st December, 1948, was 2,805 as compared with 1,507 on the 31st December, 1947.

Would the Minister say how many of these houses under construction were planned before 1948?

Mr. Murphy

There were none of them planned.

The Minister has not been able to make a plan which is an improvement on anything he found there.

It was slowed up, that is all.

Mr. Murphy

The figures given are very embarrassing to my predecessor.
