Vol. 115 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Quarry Workers.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that nine county council quarry workers have been laid off from the Donabate county council quarry; and, if so, whether he will make representations to have these men re-employed.

I understand that the nine men referred to were employed on a temporary basis and that they were laid off when their services were no longer required. The question of their re-employment would be one for the local authority.

Is the Minister aware that some of these men were employed for over two years?

It is evident from the county council report that these nine men were originally recruited for quarry work on a temporary basis. Eight of them are single men and the other is a married man with no family. It is a matter for the county council, of which the Deputy is a member.

Single men have to live also. I know what is responsible for this—they went out with the road grants. It is the policy of the inter-Party Government generally to throw people on the roadside.
