Vol. 116 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Roscommon Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether, and, if so, when it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire the non-residential farm of Mr. Clarke situated at Holly-well, County Roscommon, for the relief of uneconomic holders.

Proceedings in this case are at an advanced stage, but I cannot state when they will be completed.

Is the Minister aware that considerable agitation took place in this locality about seven years ago, when Mr. Clarke bought this farm and that, because the people agitated for their rights, the Land Commission decided that they should be punished, with the result that no effort was made to acquire these lands until recently and will he take steps to urge the Land Commission to have this matter dealt with as soon as possible?

As a matter of fact, no delay is countenanced or has taken place. The position to which the Deputy has referred — the punishment of agitators and so on — belongs to a period before this Government came into office. It is an unhappy memory.

Will the Minister urge the Land Commission to see that this matter is dealt with as soon as possible?

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission are prepared to consider the advisability of acquiring the non-residential farm held by Mr. Joseph Coen, Knock-glass, Ballinameen, Boyle, on the Balf and Flanagan estate for the purpose of relieving congestion in the locality.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of the lands in question, but I will have the position inquired into.
