Vol. 116 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - “Open Packed” Meat Exports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what restrictions, if any attach to the export to Great Britain of "open packed" meat as to quantity and price; if similar restrictions are imposed on other countries exporting this food there; and, if not, whether he will explain the reason for this state of affairs.

Exports of open-pack meat products to Great Britain ceased in 1941 and have only recently been resumed.

So far as my Department is concerned, products intended for export must conform with certain requirements designed to ensure proper standards of quality.

Open-pack meat products imported into Great Britain are subject to price control there and it has been ascertained that the British authorities are not prepared to take from any exporting country more than certain limited quantities of such products. The imports from this country will be of such an extent as to result in a reasonably good volume of trade, if our exporters are satisfied with the price and other conditions, but the total in terms of money value has not yet been finally agreed.
