Vol. 117 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discrimination against Traders.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that some manufacturers are refusing to supply building materials and hardware goods to hardware merchants throughout the country, and that distribution is taking place through a small ring of merchants attempting to monopolise the products of certain Irish factories; and, if so, whether he proposes to take any steps to end this discrimination against the smaller trader.

I am aware that the distribution of building material and hardware goods is confined by some manufacturers to members of particular trade associations or traders approved by these associations under agreements between the manufacturers and the associations. I am gravely concerned at the existence of such restrictive practices on trade in this instance and in others which have come to my notice. I am having a general inquiry in the matter made by my Department, the result of which will be reported to the Government for consideration as to the desirability of promoting legislation to control such practices.
