Vol. 118 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahirciveen Electricity Supply

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the people of Cahirciveen require an extension of the Electricity Supply Board system to their area; and whether he will request the board to provide adequate facilities as soon as possible.

I am aware that the extension of the Electricity Supply Board's system to the Cahirciveen area is desired, but, as I have already informed the Deputy in reply to previous questions, areas in South Kerry are remote from the board's existing transmission system and cannot on economic grounds be considered for supply under the normal development programme. The alternative of providing supply under the rural electrification scheme cannot be considered for some time as it would involve the construction of a new 38 KV line from Tralee to Killarney and this would render the extension wholly uneconomic at present.
