asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware (a) that serious inconvenience is being caused by the operation of Emergency Powers No. 276 Order, 1943, in so far as it prohibits the establishment of new retail businesses within three miles of the Border, and (b) that this Order is causing hardship particularly to men who served in the Defence Forces during the emergency and who intended to open retail businesses in their home areas; and, if so, whether he will arrange to have the Order amended so that new retail businesses may be opened within three miles of the Border in the same way as they may be opened elsewhere.

For some time past I have been considering whether it is any longer necessary to maintain this Order in force, and I hope to have in the near future the information I require to enable me to put the matter before the Government for a decision.
