Vol. 118 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Eggs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the reasons for the alarming increase in the price of eggs; whether this is due to an attempt by some controlling influence in one of the various commercial rings to extract huge profits; and whether he will take drastic measures to prevent the further exploitation of the public.

The recent increase in the price of eggs is due to a seasonal scarcity which makes itself felt at this time of the year. Egg prices react quickly to a change in the supply position and during the annual period of scarcity there is an upward tendency in egg prices.

I have no evidence that the existing situation is being used for the purpose of exploiting the public but I should like to repeat the advice which has already been offered to consumers that by reducing their purchases they can help to bring down the general level in egg prices.

I may add that it is expected that the period of seasonal scarcity will be of short duration this year and supplies should increase in the near future to an extent which will be more than sufficient to satisfy the home demand.

Can the Minister explain why the price of eggs went up in one day by 9d. a dozen?

Largely because consumers will take no steps whatever to protect themselves and very largely because, when there is a mere mention of scarcity, consumers rush in to buy up and store eggs and other commodities which, rumour has it, are going to increase in price, and thereby create a scarcity which brings about an increase in price. It will be clear that no action taken by this Government or no action that could be taken by the largest number of inspectors I could appoint will be in any way effective in controlling prices unless we get the cooperation of consumers as well.

Has the Minister decided to control the price?

I did not say I had and the Deputy knows I did not.

Why the reference to inspectors?

Is the Minister aware that in parts of Ireland eggs are being bought from producers at 2/6 and 3/- a dozen?

I am not so aware. I know as a matter of fact that producers have been paid in the last fortnight as much as 4/- and 5/- a dozen.

I can supply the Minister with the particulars.

Supply us with the eggs.
