Vol. 118 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fermoy Flooding.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will cause an inspection to be made by an engineer of his Department with a view to obviating the flooding which occurs frequently at Fermoy causing serious hardship and financial loss to shopkeepers and other residents in the immediate vicinity of the river.

It is presumed that the Deputy has in mind the carrying out of a scheme for the relief of flooding under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949. The selection and formulation of suitable works under this Act for submission to the Department for approval is a matter for the local authorities. No proposal for the relief of flooding at Fermoy was included in the list of works as finally approved by the county council for the current financial year. As the matter is primarily one for the local authority it would not be appropriate to arrange for an inspection at this stage by an engineering inspector of this Department.
