Vol. 118 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what progress the Land Commission have made towards acquiring the farm of Mr. Martin Brennan, Cottage, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, for the relief of congestion in the area.

I will arrange to have the Deputy informed when this case reaches its final stage.

Can the Minister give us any assurance that this long-standing question will be settled during the coming year?

I think so, but it is impossible to state definitely.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission are aware of the urgent necessity for acquiring the farm of Mr. Talbot situated at Garry Castle, Athlone, in order to relieve the plight of the flooded out farmers in the Clonowen area north of Athlone; and, if so, whether they will take appropriate action without delay.

I will ask the Land Commission to look into this case.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when a scheme for the division of Mr. Patrick Casserley's holding on the Balfe estate, County Roscommon, is likely to be put into operation.

This case is sub judice.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have yet reached a decision in connection with the non-residential farm of Mr. Clarke, situated at Hollywell, County Roscommon; and, if so, when a scheme for the division of those lands is likely to be put into operation.

This case is at an advanced stage.

Will the Minister state what he means by "an advanced stage"? In the case of an illness it means near to death and I hope it does not mean death to this scheme before it goes through.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission intend to deal with the question of the division of Clondarah and Araghty bogs on the Talbot estate, County Roscommon, in view of the unsatisfactory conditions obtaining there regarding undefined turbary rights, road making and drainage; and, if so, whether he will state when the necessary work will be undertaken.

This matter is being examined but it is too early yet to say what the outcome will be.

Is the Minister aware that a dispute took place in this area about 12 years ago and that there is one particular individual in the locality who has made trouble repeatedly with the Land Commission? Will the Minister state if it is on account of this individual that the Land Commission is so slow to move in fixing up the turbary rights and drainage in this locality?

This goes back to a peculiar method of dividing the bogs that the tenants had put into operation three or four years ago. They refused to surrender their title to the Land Commission and have kept the Land Commission out although the Land Commission is anxious to allot the bog into proper allotments or stripes and carry out the drainage, fencing and road-making.

I would remind the Minister that some Deputies are saying that they cannot hear him and that he is addressing one Deputy.

Arising further out of the Minister's reply, first of all, this information is completely incorrect; and is he aware that all the people in that locality, with the exception of one, have tried for years past to get the particular work done that I have questioned him about, and if this individual in the locality——

The Deputy is repeating his other supplementary question.

Is the Minister aware that his information on the case is completely wrong, and would he go into the matter immediately? With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to raise this matter on the Adjournment.
