Vol. 118 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Non-Nationals.

Mr. Brady

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that an effort is being made to obtain permission for a certain number of non-national stone-masons to take up employment in this country, and if he will state whether it is intended to grant such permission.

I have received only one application for permission to employ an alien stone-mason for monumental work. This application is being considered in the light of the employment position in the occupation, and in consultation with the unions concerned.

The Deputy will be aware, no doubt, that non-nationals who are British subjects do not need a permit from me before taking up employment here.

Mr. Brady

Is the Taoiseach aware that recently five of the 12 stone-masons employed at the Córas Iompair Éireann place in Dublin have been dismissed within the last week?

I am not, but I do not think it has anything to do with the question the Deputy has put down.
