Vol. 118 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Firewood.

Mr. Brady

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (i) the quantity of firewood logs disposed of from the Dublin fuel dumps during the past 18 months; (ii) the average price per ton paid for them, and (iii) the estimated value and weight of the amount retained for consumption in Dublin, and of the amount delivered to other parts of the country.

(i) From 5th July, 1948, until 21st May, 1949, when the stocks were cleared, 206,613 tons of firewood were sold from the dumps at Dublin and Dún Laoghaire. (ii) The average price paid for the stocks by the public was 21/- per ton, approximately, representing a loss to the Exchequer of £795,000, without taking account of interest charges and overheads. (iii) I have no information about what quantities of firewood sold from the dumps in Dublin and Dún Laoghaire were retained for consumption in these centres.
