asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware (1) that each year numbers of young men who have completed training in various trades in the technical schools and other institutions have to emigrate because the trade unions concerned refuse to accept them as members; and (2) that skilled men who returned home following the Government's assurance that there was plenty of work available find themselves unemployable for the same reason; and, if so, whether he has any proposals for remedying this state of affairs.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Skilled Trades.
No cases have been brought to my attention of young men who have completed their courses in technical schools or other institutions having to emigrate for the reason stated in the first part of the question.
As regards the second part, certain instances have arisen in which it is alleged that skilled men returning home have been denied membership of trade unions and I am having inquiries made.
