Vol. 119 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Telephone Service.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that a public telephone is needed at Strawberry Beds, Lucan, which is the centre of a populous area where there is no alternative service available; and, if so, whether he will take steps to provide one as soon as possible.

I regret that the use likely to be made of a telephone kiosk at the Strawberry Beds would not be sufficient to justify the erection of one there.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the present inadequacy of the telephone service in the area of Finglas, and whether he will state what steps he proposes to take to remedy the position, with particular reference to the need for a public kiosk at Tolka estate, Finglas.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that great inconvenience is caused to business people and factory owners in Finglas area due to inadequate telephone facilities; and, if so, whether he will give priority to Finglas in the matter of providing extra lines.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that telephone subscribers in the Finglas area experience difficulty in obtaining calls promptly owing to the rapid development which is taking place in the area, and whether he will take steps to provide an improved service since the average delay exceeds 20 minutes for all calls.

With your permission, Sir, it is proposed to take Questions Nos. 12, 13 and 14 together. There has been abnormal delay at times on calls between Finglas and Dublin owing mainly to the recent rapid growth of traffic between the two places. In order to improve the service, additional lines are being erected and will be put into service shortly.

The provision of a telephone kiosk at Tolka estate would not be warranted at present by the use likely to be made of it, but the matter will be reviewed at the end of the year.

Is the Minister aware that the district known as Tolka estate is a very thickly populated working-class district with almost 200 working-class houses? The district is very far removed from any centre where telephone facilities are available. Will he have this matter reviewed before the end of the present year because of the hardship under which the residents are suffering by reason of this lack of telephone facilities?

The Deputy's representations will be borne in mind.

Will the Minister state when the extra lines will be laid to Finglas as a number of factories established there in the years 1946-47 are in a very bad way at the moment? These factories are employing a good deal of labour. Very often they are delayed an hour when making telephone calls. Will the Minister try to have these lines laid as soon as possible?

The widow is not at the back of this, is she?

The widow has married again.

I can assure the Deputy the lines will be laid in a matter of three or four days.
