Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Housing Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (1) the date on which the housing scheme now being carried out by Kilkenny County Council was initiated; (2) the number of sites acquired (a) compulsorily, and (b) voluntarily; (3) the date on which plans were approved in principle and the dates on which final plans were approved; (4) the date on which work was first begun; (5) the number of houses built and occupied to date; (6) the number of houses now under construction; and (7) the average cost of those built (a) by direct labour, and (b) under contract.

The particulars are as follows:—

(1) The schemes now being carried out by the Kilkenny County Council were initiated, and the sites were acquired in the period 1935 to 1943.

(2) The number of sites acquired (a) compulsorily, and (b) voluntarily are as follows: Sites for 456 houses compulsorily; sites for 63 houses by agreement.

(3) The dates on which plans were approved in principle and final plans were approved for these schemes are as follows: Rural scheme—10th September, 1946 (in principle), and 18th March, 1947, and 19th August, 1948 (final plans). Clogh scheme—12th February, 1948, and 14th May, 1948. Thomastown scheme—14th May, 1949, and 12th October, 1949.

(4) Work began on the following dates: Rural schemes—May, 1948. Clogh scheme—April, 1949. Thomastown scheme—December, 1948.

(5) Up to the 28th February, 1950, 119 houses had been completed under the rural scheme, of which 101 had been occupied. No houses in the other two schemes mentioned had been completed by that date.

(6) The number of houses under construction on the 28th February, 1950, was 97.

(7) The average final cost of houses completed by (a) direct labour, and (b) contract is not yet available, as in the case of direct labour houses final costs have not yet been fully examined and in the case of contract houses adjustments in respect of price variation clause have not yet been certified.
