Vol. 120 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) how much land the Forestry Branch have acquired in the North Mayo area, and (b) the present position regarding the strip of land on the Atkinson estate, Glencastle, Belmullet, and whether the Forestry Branch consider this land suitable for afforestation.

The answer is: (a) Approximately 650 acres; (b) The strip of land in question cannot be identified. Offers have been received of some small areas in the district. These will be dealt with in due course.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the position regarding the Buddicum farm, Glenturk, near Bangor Erris, indicating how much of this farm the Forestry Branch intend to acquire for afforestation purposes, and if he will further state when the balance will be divided amongst the local uneconomic holders and the cause of the delay in acquiring it.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of 9th November, 1949. This estate comprises 3,357 acres of land of which 138 acres are let to employees. Only 10 per cent. of the remainder is plantable in its present state and is made up of eight scattered portions. A decision on acquisition has been deferred pending inquiry into other lands in the district.
