Vol. 121 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Licensed Vehicles.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will indicate (1) the number of taxis at present licensed to ply for hire in the Dublin City area, excluding Dún Laoghaire Borough, and (2) the number of hackney cars and self-drive cars available in the area, and if he will give similar information for the years 1940, 1947, 1948 and 1949.

I have here a tabular statement containing the statistics asked for in respect of taxis and hackneys for the whole of the Dublin Metropolitan Area including the Dún Laoghaire Borough, and I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it published in the Official Report.

Separate figures for the Dublin Metropolitan Area, exclusive of Dún Laoghaire, are not readily available, and as the taxis and hackneys licensed in Dún Laoghaire are free to operate throughout the area I do not consider that the work of compiling them would be warranted. Self-drive cars are not licensed as public service vehicles and there is no official record to show how many such vehicles are in the area.

Following is the statement:—

The number of taxis and hackneys licensed in the Dublin Metropolitan Area are as follows:—
