Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Postman.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that Mr. John O'Gorman of Ballyduff, County Kerry, who was recommended first on the list by his Department for appointment as auxiliary postman at Ballyduff, was not appointed to the post; that Mr. O'Gorman was relief postman at Ballyduff from 1946 up to July, 1949, and served as temporary auxiliary postman at Ballyduff from 6th July, 1949, to 31st December, 1949, and, further, that Mr. O'Gorman, who is a widower with two children under four years of age and is presently unemployed, has over 12 years' Army service to his credit, and whether, in the circumstances, he will state why Mr. O'Gorman was not appointed to the post in question.

Mr. O'Gorman's employment at Ballyduff was purely temporary. Four applicants, including Mr. O'Gorman, were nominated by the local employment exchange for the quasi-permanent appointment. I gave very careful consideration to the merits of all the applicants and I had special regard to their domestic circumstances and to their I.R.A. or Army service. I am satisfied that the applicant selected was the most suitable.
