Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Burtonport Landing Facilities.

asked the Minister for Finance if it has been proposed to provide improved landing facilities on Iniskeeragh Island, Burtonport, County Donegal.

I should make it clear to the Deputy that, apart from cases of a special kind, I have no responsibility for marine works of the kind in question, except to the extent to which they prove suitable subjects for schemes for the relief of unemployment.

As the Deputy no doubt is aware, such proposals, even if otherwise suitable as employment schemes, require to be supported by a recommendation from the Department of Agriculture in the local fishing and/or agricultural interests. In this particular case, the Department reported that the expenditure involved in providing the required facilities would not be justified by the fishery interests of the area. Moreover, the unemployment position on Iniskeeragh Island would not warrant the execution of the proposed work as an employment scheme.
